“Faith, hope, and love—emotions that linger like the chorus of this song.”
Power Pop / Pop Punk from Sweden
Marlon Son, a power pop / pop punk project based in Trollhättan, Sweden—a small town just outside Gothenburg, the country’s second-largest and most influential city—has just released their latest single, “Smithereens”.
The track, launched on Friday, March 27, is a 3-minute song that blends a nostalgic, hopeful, and subtly existential theme with an energetic, vibrant rhythm, crowned by a catchy, memorable, and emotionally resonant chorus. It’s now available on all major streaming platforms.
In the words of Lars Johansson, vocalist and founder:
“Our inspiration and essence in this song comes from a nostalgic journey around faith, hope, and love. But I’d love to hear from fans how they interpret the lyrics and what emotions they get from the melody.”
More About Marlon Son
Lars Johansson and Tommy Malm met at Ljungskile Folkhögskola, where they discovered a shared musical passion and the ambition to form a band. With punk in their minds and countless ideas, they launched “Every Dog Bites”—“the greatest band name ever,” according to Lars, the group’s former bassist.
Though E.D.B. never left the garage, it became a vital creative lab. After numerous live shows, Lars decided to start a new project with help from his friends—thus, Marlon Son was born.
Together with Anders Johansson (now known as Anders Rosengren), a talented multi-instrumentalist and producer, they released a demo featuring three songs written by Lars and Tommy: “Home”, “Love”, and “Cowboy”. These tracks form part of the album “Chosen Reality”, which captured the best of E.D.B., transforming it into catchy power punk pop songs with narrative lyrics and clear artistic ambition.
In 2015, they released the four original tracks alongside bonus material worldwide via Record Union, and today they’re available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Tidal, and other platforms.
Their single “Boy” has received airplay on Mexican radio and was highlighted by Italian magazine Nuove Scoperte–Atom Heart as one of their favorite songs of 2022.
Smithereens • Marlon Son • Indie Valley Music Review
“Smithereens” opens instantly with an energetic, melodic vibe that captures the spirit of contemporary power pop. From the first second, the acoustic guitar delivers dynamic strums, interwoven with a melodic line led by an electric guitar with controlled distortion, creating a fresh, vibrant, and propulsive introduction.
Around the 0:36 mark, the drums enter with just the kick, setting the stage. At 0:40, they explode into a classic pop-punk rhythm, as Lars’s voice bursts in with energy, clarity, and presence. His tone—solid, melodic, with a slight rasp reminiscent of ’90s punk—sits just above the instrumentation without overpowering it, delivering its narrative with strength and focus.
The bass enters with a precise, tight, and rhythmically solid execution, anchoring the foundation so the verses can unfold their lyrical intent with purpose.
At 1:05, the chorus arrives: a burst of melody and emotion that undoubtedly sticks in your mind. The lyrics reinforce the song’s core—faith, hope, love—while the instrumentation pulses with warmth and intensity. Though nostalgia colors the narrative, the overall feel radiates a youthful, fresh, and hopeful energy.
After a powerful and expressive chorus, the verses return at 1:30 with even more direct energy, leading to the second chorus at 1:54, now enriched with more expressive backing vocals that faithfully support the lead.
The song builds its climax cohesively until 2:32, when a melodic, fresh electric guitar solo—deeply rooted in pop-punk tradition—takes center stage. This instrumental section extends with vitality, culminating in a high-energy finish at 3:03.
Overall, “Smithereens” offers an accessible, listener-friendly structure, perfect for any fan of power pop, pop punk, or melodic punk rock.
Technically, the production is excellent: arrangements are meticulous, with careful attention to every vocal and instrumental detail. Frequency balance (lows, mids, highs) is expertly handled, and the mixing and mastering are top-tier, resulting in a sound that is crisp, deep, vibrant, energetic, and immersive on any playback system.
In short, “Smithereens” is a song that makes you reflect—and at the same time, makes you turn the volume up.
It’s a pleasure for us to present this new release, “Smithereens” by Marlon Son. Go listen to it on your favorite streaming platform.
