Farewell—a deeply emotive album that invites reflection with honesty and quiet strength.

Folk Rock From New Jersey

Joe Kocher releases Farewell, his new album recorded at Lakehouse Recording Studios in Asbury Park, New Jersey, in May 2025. Farewell is out today, November 7th, across all digital platforms. Produced by James Maddock, engineered and mixed by Nick Semanchik, and mastered by Colin McCabe, the album features a stellar lineup:

  • Joe Kocher: lead vocals
  • James Maddock: guitars, backing vocals
  • Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors): drums
  • John Conte: bass
  • Jonathan Tea: keyboards
  • Sharon Lasher: backing vocals

The eight tracks that make up Farewell chart an intimate, universal emotional landscape:

  1. “First Stone” traces the arc of romance—its discovery, its loss, and the impulse to assign blame.
  2. “It’ll Be Alright (2025)«, This song addresses addiction as a reality that in one form or another—can touch anyone’s life. It’s a tribute to those who face it, and a reminder: no one fights that battle alone.
  3. “Farewell”, the title track, was written after the passing of Joe’s sister: a personal goodbye that expands into a collective letter on compassion, empathy, and human connection.
  4. “This Too Shall Pass” is a protest anthem rejecting silence as compliance—urging listeners to speak out, stand up, and fight for those who cannot.
  5. “Coat Of Paint (2025)” portrays the quiet fractures long-term relationships endure—and the will to keep repainting, together.
  6. “They Don’t Know (2025)”, written years ago yet painfully current, gives voice to lost souls who’ve misplaced their moral compass.
  7. “It’s Been A Long Time (2025)” revisits an older composition—once a driving blues number—now reimagined with a reflective, laid-back feel, evoking the ache of first love.
  8. “My Life Always Starts With You” closes the album as a bare, unadorned apology—no excuses, just truth.

As Joe Kocher himself puts it:

“This album is a mixture of old and new songs, that I thought best captures my songwriting style and what I’m about as a songwriter. As I was thinking about a title for this album, I realized all the songs have some type of loss in them. Loss of a loved one, faith, trust, addiction, innocence, romance and democracy. Not a party album, but one of reflection and resolve.”

More About Joe Kocher

Based in Brick, New Jersey, Joe Kocher has spent years writing and performing songs that capture the essence of American life: resilience, connection, and quiet courage. His music—raw, honest, deeply human—has long been a lifeline, both for himself and his listeners.

After 15 years in San José, California—where he released two albums and a single via Rowena Records—Joe returned home to New Jersey in 2024. There, among the pines of the Garden State Parkway and childhood memories, his creative drive reignited with renewed strength.

Inspired by legends like Jim Croce, John Hiatt, Rodney Crowell, Van Morrison, and Bruce Springsteen, Joe has forged a sound that honors the American folk tradition while speaking in his own voice—intimate, reflective, sometimes protest-driven, always human. In recent years, his songs have explored not only everyday struggles, but also universal themes: love, loss, hope, and memory.

Indie Valley Music Review • Farewell

Farewell is a profoundly emotive work, one in which Joe Kocher has poured his soul into every detail—from lyrics and composition to cover art and engineering. The result is both technically excellent (production, mixing, and mastering executed at the highest level) and authentically human—something that cannot be faked.

“First Stone”, the album’s opener, strikes a rare balance: the emotional weight of its lyrics paired with an instrumental energy that pulls you in from the first chord. Pure folk rock unfolds through controlled electric distortion, precise acoustic textures, dynamic drumming, a bassline rich in depth and elegance, and versatile keyboards tracing blues and country hues. The vocal harmonies enrich without overwhelming. It’s a song that invites contemplation and reflection — yet carries a subtle energy that inspires: whether you’re on the beach or in the mountains, watching the sunset fade, or simply at home on your couch, beer in hand, it’s enough to make you feel, somehow, that the moment gives something back.

“Coat Of Paint”, meanwhile, begins as an intimate ballad: piano, acoustic arpeggios, and a serene vocal weave a nostalgic, tender atmosphere. But the song refuses to stay still—by the chorus, it swells into fuller folk rock terrain, building like an emotional crescendo toward an electric guitar solo, before closing with a reinvigorated, heartfelt refrain. It stands as a masterclass in evolving balladry—honest, dynamic, and deeply felt.

Thematically, what unites these songs is a sense of loss expressed with genuine vulnerability—not as lament, but as acknowledgment. This is an existential record, in the best sense: each track invites reflection. And it’s deeply realistic, because it speaks to what we’ve all lived—the loss of faith, of a loved one, of innocence, of the courage to speak. Farewell doesn’t shy from darkness; it meets it with clarity, melody, and a voice that feels like a trusted friend. In that way, it becomes almost therapeutic—a reminder that music, at its best, doesn’t just soundtrack life; it helps us understand it.

It’s a genuine pleasure to present this new album. We encourage everyone to listen to Farewell on their favorite streaming platform.
