A track that balances weight, atmosphere, and raw intensity: “Stop Buzzer” is doom metal infused with progressive metal and electronic textures.

Doom Metal From Albuquerque, New Mexico

Durkmoose, the rock duo based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has released their new single “Stop Buzzer”—a four-minute instrumental piece that fuses doom metal with experimental rock and progressive rock influences, enriched by synthesizer arrangements that expand its atmospheric depth. The composition projects an intense darkness, introspective energy, and a raw visceral force that seems to propel the listener toward the edges of the universe—or perhaps straight into hell itself. Its harmonic progressions don’t just resonate physically; they invite reflection on what’s been overlooked and left unresolved. In the words of bassist Aaron Pickett:

“Inspiration would be interpersonal conflict in regard to opinions.”

More About Durkmoose

Durkmoose consists of Aaron Pickett (bass) and Thomas Hooker (guitar, synths), who first met in high school in Indianapolis a couple of decades ago, bonding over video games and the grunge scene. Though now separated by nearly 1,400 miles—Pickett works as an air traffic controller in Albuquerque, New Mexico, while Hooker is a computer programmer and web designer in Portland, Oregon—they continue making music together through remote collaboration.

Their debut EP, Hill Controlled (released July 2020), earned three nominations at the 2021 New Mexico Music Awards, including Best Mastering Engineer for Andy Rogulich’s work on the track Delirium. The band’s name comes from a colloquial Navy phrase—“durkmoose”—which the two have affectionately used for each other since Pickett’s time in the Navy.

After reconnecting in Texas in 2006, they casually revisited music, but it wasn’t until 2017—after attending an A Perfect Circle concert together in Austin—that they committed seriously to the project. “We just looked at each other and said, ‘You know what? Let’s just do it,’” recalls Hooker.

Their creative process blends annual in-person jam sessions with ongoing digital file exchanges. Thomas handles mixing, and Andy Rogulich masters the final tracks, achieving a natural, unoverproduced sound that preserves the music’s raw breath and weight. This cinematic quality has led numerous listeners to suggest their music would suit film soundtracks, and the duo has begun reaching out to music supervisors. They are currently working on a new project, aiming to release an EP annually and explore a heavier, more dynamic sonic direction.

Stop Buzzer • Indie Valley Music Review

It was a genuine pleasure to listen to and analyze “Stop Buzzer”, an instrumental piece that immediately stands out for its strong sonic identity, expressive character, and well-defined artistic vision within the fusion of doom metal and stoner rock—enhanced by electronic and synth elements that greatly expand its atmospheric scope. We also detect subtle post-rock nuances, always wrapped in a distinctly dark aesthetic.

The production reveals a clear intention in crafting immersive environments and textural density. The track unfolds with a solid narrative arc, maintaining tension, weight, and dynamic flow throughout. The selection of tones and sonic layers is thoughtfully curated to evoke a deep, dark, and immersive atmosphere, capturing the listener’s attention from the very first second.

In the mix, there is a balanced treatment of low, mid, and high frequencies, allowing each element to occupy its own space without clashing. The rhythm section provides a strong structural foundation: the drums feel present and energetic without overpowering, while the bass reinforces the depth and heaviness central to the genre. The guitars feature controlled saturation that delivers grit and power, and the electronic elements are seamlessly integrated—adding ambiance and texture without distraction.

The mastering preserves a satisfying sense of width and body, with dynamic range that lets the instruments breathe while maintaining impact. The final result is a piece with presence, emotional weight, and a clearly consolidated sonic identity.

Beyond its dark atmosphere and sonic weight, “Stop Buzzer” reveals remarkable instrumental command: its dynamic shifts and instrumental passages display technical virtuosity that flows with natural ease—without unnecessary flourishes. It’s a piece crafted for fans of doom metal and progressive metal: demanding, atmospheric, and deeply immersive.

It’s a true pleasure for us to present this new release. We encourage everyone to listen to Durkmoose and their new track “Stop Buzzer” on their favorite streaming platform.
