«We are in trying times and I feel silence is compliance, so this is my voice.»
Folk Rock / Country Rock / Indie Folk from New Jersey, USA
Joe Kocher, acclaimed musician and songwriter based in New Jersey, has just released his latest single, «Not So Great». The track presents itself as a powerful protest song about the current times, directly inspired by the sociocultural landscape in the United States.
This release solidifies Kocher’s artistic mission: capturing the essence of American life through lyrics that explore resilience, connection, and steadfast courage. It is a call to reclaim the true essence of freedom, which in its most genuine form goes hand in hand with kindness, humanity, and free expression. With a raw, honest, and authentically transcendent approach, the artist uses his music not only as a reflection of everyday struggles but as a vehicle for protest and hope in the face of today’s challenges.
Interview Section — What is the essence and inspiration behind Not So Great?
Joe Kocher responds exclusively to indievalleymusic.com:
«The inspiration for the song started when Trump started with lets make America great again, essentially he was saying lets go back to when women, people of color and the LGBTQ community were marginalized. I obviously don’t agree with that so I wrote a song about it. I will let the lyrics speak for themselves on the topic of racism, cultism and religion. We are in trying times and I feel silence is compliance, so this my voice saying FDT.»
Can you tell us about your musical projects and goals for late 2026 and 2027?
«My goal and project is to release a single every month, from October 2026 to October 2027. Currently, I’m finishing 16 new songs. Some months will include two releases.
I’ve been recording at Lakehouse Recording Studios in Asbury Park, New Jersey. This project consists of completely unreleased songs. As a songwriter, I try not to limit myself to just one style; therefore, these 16 songs are divided into three groups. Five of them have a jazzier feel, including a festive song titled Christmas In Jersey (Where I Belong), which is scheduled for release in mid-November.
Another group of five songs leans more toward folk rock. One of them is my first release «Not So Great», a protest song about the current times.»

More About Joe Kocher
After 15 years in San José, California—where he released two albums and a single via Rowena Records—Joe returned home to New Jersey in 2024. Based in Brick, his creative drive reignited among the pines of the Garden State Parkway and childhood memories, fueling a renewed artistic chapter.

His songs explore universal themes such as love, loss, hope, and memory, reflecting on the human experience and the search for genuine freedom.
Not So Great ~ Joe Kocher ~ Indie Valley Music Review
«Not So Great» by Joe Kocher possesses an exquisite duality. Its energetic rhythm and instrumentation that convey a certain joy coexist with a particular and moving nostalgia, expressed through a voice and performance that connect immediately. From the first chords, the work establishes a sense of reflective pain—not uncomfortable, but introspective—that invites you to pause and connect with your own emotions.
The song transports the listener to sonic landscapes where Appalachian folk and acoustic rock converge, with a country and Americana identity crossed by a deep sentimental sensitivity. As the song flows and progresses, a sonic journey unfolds that evokes mountains, introspection, and a masterful duality: nostalgia and joy simultaneously, without losing authenticity or conceptual depth. There is pain and perhaps disappointment, but also a latent hope that everything could improve. The world needs harmony, empathy, and peace, and that is precisely the atmosphere this work conveys.
Duration: 03:11 | Tempo: 108 BPM
The song begins with high energy. The kick drum marks the pulse and rhythm, projecting a warm, deep, and enveloping sound. It is accompanied by an electro-acoustic rhythm guitar executing chords with a clean and very harmonious tone, masterfully mixed and panned to provide a wide stereo sensation, energetic and with attitude. The bass, in this intro, has a clean execution with a sonic body of great presence.
After a few seconds, Joe’s voice enters. The bass stops, leaving only the kick drum and guitar to mark the pulse of the first verses. His voice presents itself as energetic and direct, with a wide dynamic range that sits above the instrumental without overpowering it. Free of artifice and only nuanced by a subtle reverb that adds depth to the ensemble, his interpretation transitions between nostalgic nuances, contained pain, and latent hope. It is a rich register in nuances, settled in the mid and low frequencies, with a raspy but extremely harmonious touch, with a texture that refers to the singer-songwriter tradition and the roots of Americana. The first verses flow with total synergy and naturalness.
At second 0:26, very subtle banjo arrangements are appreciated that bring movement and dynamics to the song. Simultaneously, the bass returns with a clean, elegant, and balanced execution.
At second 0:41, the banjo acquires greater relevance in the mix, supported by a more forceful and present rhythmic base that accompanies the guitar strings, giving way to the first chorus: melodic, harmonious, and captivating.
At second 0:44, the snare drum enters. It sounds organic, warm, and subtly reverberated, tuned especially to highlight low and mid frequencies. Its entry introduces an even more solid rhythmic base, a resource that injects greater character and drive into the refrain. It is worth noting that no cymbals, hi-hat, crash, or ride are used, which gives the work an even more folk and authentic identity.
At minute 1:01, the instruments execute a brief pause in unison, leaving a fine reverberant layer that begins a new verse section. The instruments accompany with solidity and full harmony. In this part, Joe’s voice is appreciated as even more energetic and rich in nuances, with a more expressive modulation, while the mandolin adopts a more minimalist execution, with arrangements at the end of phrases.
At minute 1:25, Joe’s voice gains even more presence in the mix. The instruments stop, and only the kick drum and mandolin accompany with a more paused and minimalist rhythm, creating an intimate moment that adds great dynamics to the piece.
At minute 1:33, the bass enters, accentuating this section that functions as a bridge.
At minute 1:42, all instruments enter in a crescendo attitude. Very subtle reverberated tambourine arrangements are perceived that accompany the rhythm in a minimalist way. A vocal arrangement of «Ohhhhh Ohhhh Ohhhh…» opens a new chorus, this time with a much more expressive and energetic singing. It is a song that invites you to move, but that, due to its lyrical content, also inevitably invites us to reflect.
At minute 2:02, a new verse section enters. The rhythm guitar, kick drum pulse, and bass accompany with great harmony to Joe’s central and expressive voice, while arpeggiated mandolin arrangements are perceived.
At minute 2:27, a new bridge is presented with sung verses and a paused rhythm instrumental, accentuating the terms of each phrase. Bass, kick drum, guitar, and mandolin accentuate with great dynamics.
At minute 2:36, the banjo comes in, playing rhythmic chords with high energy and masterful panning that adds movement and sonic three-dimensionality, creating a more vibrant and immersive listening experience. This section evokes the genuine sensation of being in the front row at a bar performance; a versatile and dynamic musical arrangement that announces the arrival of the final chorus.
At minute 2:47, once again the characteristic vocal arrangement «Ohhhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhhh…» by Joe presents the last chorus. This unfolds in a sonic climax in which all instruments participate, in a highly enjoyable musical harmony and synergy, but that, without a doubt, invites us to reflect. It is music with meaning, with soul and hope. The song ends in a choral attitude at 03:11.
