Hurt – Haku Psychose, Cinematic Alt Rock from Tokyo

French singer and tattoo artist Haku Psychose, currently based in Tokyo, has just released her latest single: a new interpretation of “Hurt”—the iconic song originally written by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and masterfully covered by Johnny Cash.

Released on May 8, 2026, this version journeys through orchestral pop and alternative rock, infusing the track with a rock-infused, intimate, atmospheric, and ethereal quality that culminates in a profoundly cinematic listening experience.

This is not merely a cover—it’s a sonic confession. Every release by Haku—whether a reinterpretation, an anime opening, or her debut original single “WON’T DO IT”—carries deep personal meaning and emotional weight that transcends music itself. Her art comes from the heart, and “Hurt” reaffirms her artistic identity: authentic, emotive, vulnerable, and unmistakably her own.

What Is the Essence Behind Reinterpreting “Hurt”?

In the words of Haku Psychose:
“There is some song that comes between pain and scars—and ‘Hurt’ is one of them.

The first time I heard Johnny Cash’s version, I was overwhelmed. As if this song laid bare, without embellishment, emotions deeply buried within me: loss, abandonment, illness.

These are realities I faced at a very young age, sometimes brutally. Wounds that life has constantly reopened.

In recent years/months, some of these wounds have reopened: I’ve lost loved ones, I’ve felt abandoned, and illness has hit me hard. It has weakened me, to the point where I sometimes no longer recognize myself. It isolates, it distances you—from others, but also from yourself. Present since day one, it will only leave me on the last: chronic, progressive, in constant struggle with my ambitions.

And yet…

It is in this space that this cover was born.
Not to explain. Not to convince.
But to feel. And to share.”

Once again, Haku Psychose moves us with a release that transcends sound. Her version of “Hurt” is emotive, immersive, ethereal, atmospheric, and cinematic, with her voice as the absolute protagonist: captivating, intimate, and brimming with truth.

The song opens with a piano playing arpeggios and chords that establish the main melodic line with an intimate, nostalgic tone, setting a mood of deep introspection from the very first second.

At 0:12, Haku’s voice enters: subtle, soft, yet firmly present, narrating and singing with a calm that radiates serenity. It sits slightly above the piano without overpowering it, creating an intimate dialogue between voice and instrument.

At 0:52, the pre-chorus begins, accompanied by an electric guitar with subtle reverb that gradually builds a gentle crescendo, harmoniously complementing the main melody. This builds until 1:18, when the chorus erupts with renewed strength: Haku sings with heightened intensity, backed by an atmospheric acoustic-pop arrangement that evokes cinematic landscapes. Orchestral layers and enveloping textures amplify the emotional and nostalgic weight of the piece, carrying it through to 1:37.

Then, the track quiets: piano and guitar reclaim the spotlight with dynamic arpeggios that reaffirm the iconic melody.

At 1:48, the verses return, now accompanied solely by a warm, comforting acoustic guitar. At 2:12, synth arrangements enter—airy, spacious, with a classical orchestral sensibility—that flow in perfect harmony with her voice.

At 2:26, the drums burst in: a pop-rock ballad rhythm with alternative rock identity, present but never intrusive. Here, the song fully unfolds its rock energy and immersive depth.

Shortly after, at 2:28, a layer of celestial vocals (“ahhhhh…”) floats like a classical choir, adding a spiritual, sensorial dimension. The emotion grows gradually, second by second, until your chest tightens—this is music you feel in your body.

The second chorus arrives at 2:52 in its full splendor: Haku’s voice sings with raw, heartbreaking power, conveying pain, resilience, and vulnerability with honesty that touches the soul. Her delivery—grunge in intensity, alternative rock in texture, feminine in identity—is unmistakable: natural, organic, direct, free of unnecessary effects.

The chorus sustains until 3:37, when the energy gently fades, leaving only the final piano chords and a melodic synth arrangement that closes the piece with grace and stillness.

Technically, the production is masterful: every arrangement has purpose; every sonic element contributes to a perfect synergy. Nothing is missing; nothing is excessive. The mixing and mastering are top-tier, delivering clarity, depth, and a carefully panned stereo image that creates a three-dimensional, immersive, and full-bodied experience.

“Hurt” is not just a cover—it’s an act of emotional courage.
