A three-hour road west of Baltimore, where stories of struggle and hope become song.

American Folk Rock From Baltimore, MD

The album Lucky 7, released in December 2025 by Ghosts on the Wall, a band based in Baltimore, Maryland, is more than a collection of seven songs—it’s a cohesive sonic journey exploring the tension between the intimate and the social, with a production that honors the American folk rock tradition while embracing contemporary rawness.

Clocking in at 25 minutes, the record unfolds with energetic sonority, existential lyricism, and subtly metaphorical storytelling rooted in the realities of its surroundings. Within this work, “Ridgeline” stands out as a centerpiece—a composition that captures the band’s ability to transform personal and geographic experiences into universal music.

In the words of Johnny Burke, guitarist and vocalist:

“Lucky 7 is the most ambitious album I’ve done. I’m a massive fan of War on Drugs and Kurt Vile, especially their early work. I sought out the producer of those records, Jeff Zeigler, a well-known indie producer from Philadelphia. We talked and he agreed to record us, so my band and I went to Philly to lay down the initial tracks. I kept going back and forth adding layers. I also tracked some parts at home and sent them to Jeff. I’ve always loved his sound. My wife Kara, who runs our tiny label, came up with the name Lucky 7 because these were the best seven songs I had at the time, and after all the work we put in together, it just stuck.”

On “Ridgeline”, Burke explains:

“Ridgeline is half very personal and half about the area about three hours west of Baltimore. Western Maryland and West Virginia have a complex history. To say those communities are underserved is an understatement—the disparities are deep. There’s also a road that connects Baltimore to those areas, a three-hour drive that’s historically been marked by drug-related issues. We wanted to write a song about those struggles. Personally, I’ve lost many bandmates to drugs over the years, and this song was my way of expressing what I’ve been through regarding the people I love and those battles. That’s the core of it. Ultimately, we just wanted to tell a story that balances hope and hopelessness… if that makes sense.”

Kevin Baker – Mothership Records

Ghosts on the Wall and cascading folk rock flourishes / the chamber pop grandeur of Sideways, with ‘90s bohemian atmospheres and Britpop smiles.”

Don Boyette – decibelmedia.co

“Big Man – Ghosts on the Wall. An excellent groove track. The opening riff recalls a blend of Jimi Hendrix and early Black Sabbath, with psychedelic passages, a solid rhythmic foundation, and vocals carrying a ‘90s rock vibe that fits perfectly. Dark, luminous, and groovy all at once. Highly recommended.”
Michael Spedden – 97underground.com

“Sideways features a cinematic fiddle and exquisite musical details that complement its relaxed alt-folk spirit. The vocal and percussive cadence gives it strong crossover potential. A true underground gem with the possibility of breaking into the mainstream.”

Ridgeline • Ghosts on the Wall • Indie Valley Music Review

While Lucky 7 is an engaging album we’d recommend to any fan of American folk rock and blues, we focus here on “Ridgeline”—a track that envelops the listener from the first second in an intimate, warm, and deeply emotive atmosphere.

The song opens with a nostalgic guitar arpeggio, executed with the distinctive character of American folk, soon joined by harmonica that deepens the melancholic texture. The voice enters narrating and singing, with subtle reverb, positioned slightly above the instrumentation—without overpowering it—achieving the closeness that defines the genre at its best.

Around the 1:30 mark, an instrumental interlude emerges: the guitar adopts a more rock-driven identity, with controlled distortion, while the harmonica sustains the emotional core. By 1:40, the song fully unfolds: drums burst in with an American rock execution, tinged with hard rock nuances, while the bass provides solid foundations alongside them, both brushing against blues in their rhythmic approach.

The guitar takes center stage, alternating between riffs, arpeggios, and slides in the folk rock and blues tradition, in perfect synergy with the harmonica. The voice, now more direct and energetic, delivers dynamic verses that avoid typical chorus repetition, opting instead for a fluid narrative that nonetheless etches itself into memory through melodic and emotional cohesion.

The result is a song that feels authentic, honest, and uncommon—balancing introspection and energy, ideal for listening on the road, at sunset, or anytime reflection is welcome.

Technically, the production, mixing, and mastering are of high caliber, with a sonic standard that shines on any playback system.
