A song that doesn’t view the past as history—but as a mirror of the present.

Eclectic Rock From Connecticut

Matt Grenfell, a gifted songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Connecticut, presents “Monochrome”—a conceptual work released in 2025, clocking in at 4 minutes and 15 seconds, that explores how today’s global events echo historical tensions from the 20th century.

Available on all digital platforms, the song draws a direct line between historical cycles and modern life, suggesting that the same forces continue shaping the world across generations. The idea emerged while Grenfell was working as a remote tutor for a student studying the years leading up to World War I. Reviewing that material, he was struck by the parallels with contemporary geopolitical dynamics. This realization led him to delve deeper into 20th-century history, directly influencing both the lyrical narrative and the visual direction of the music video.

Together, the song and video frame history not as something distant, but as an active loop that reshapes and defines the present. As Grenfell puts it:

“ I hope the song and video can help people see the connections between past and present, and use this to build a better future.”

More About Matt Grenfell

Grenfell’s artistic journey spans decades. He began recording at the Berklee College of Music in the 1990s, but took a long pause to focus on teaching—first as a band director, then as a math teacher. His creative reawakening came in the 2020s, after being encouraged by a former Berklee roommate to revisit and re-record his early material.

That impulse led to an album largely built from songs written in the late 1980s and 1990s, laying the foundation for his current return to writing and recording. His music explores universal themes: memory, time, repetition, and reflection—always with an introspective lens and a keen eye for human patterns.

Monochrome | Matt Grenfell | Indie Valley Music Review

“Monochrome” is an exquisite fusion of eclectic rock, classic rock, and progressive nuances, where lyrics don’t just accompany the music—they lead it. Grenfell’s voice—direct, intimate, with a subtle treatment reminiscent of an AM radio broadcast—sits slightly above the instrumentation without overpowering it, thanks to a mix that combines mono (for central vocal solidity) and stereo (for ambient width), reinforcing its narrative presence.

The song opens with classic rock-style organ chords, accompanied by a minimalist drum kit using cross-stick on the snare with subtle reverb—a refined touch that adds rhythm without intrusion. The bass, played fingerstyle without a pick, anchors the track with elegance and presence.

In the chorus, the vocals shine: catchy, memorable, wrapped in an almost imperceptible synth layer that’s essential to creating an atmosphere that is ethereal, immersive, and spatial.

At 2:05, the piece takes a decisive turn: an intense instrumental breakdown introduces a sense of controlled chaos—a sonic metaphor for today’s global landscape. Here, the electric guitar unleashes expressive solos, the vocals grow more dramatic, and the mix maintains remarkable clarity even amid complexity. This moment aligns with a visual rupture in the music video, reinforcing that this chaos is not abstract—it’s tangible.

Then, the song returns to its main theme, but now with renewed intensity: the narration becomes more urgent, the electric guitar weaves solos with a clearly rock-driven execution, and the entire ensemble flows with natural synergy and emotional weight. It’s in this final section that the song reaches its fullness—not as mere repetition, but as a conscious reaffirmation of the historical loop.

Technically, the production is impeccable: every element has its space, its purpose, its silence. The result is a piece that rewards attentive listening—4 minutes and 15 seconds of poetic realism, compelling music, and historical awareness.

If one were to distill a reflection from the song, it would be: “Analyzing globalism through time doesn’t predict the future, but sharpens our perception of what could unfold—a loop. From this perspective, studying the past isn’t about foreseeing a fixed destiny, but about expanding our ability to read the present and offering a deeper understanding of possible futures.”

And that’s where its power lies: “Monochrome” doesn’t leave us in the bubble of the self—it connects us to the collective, reminding us that everything happening in the world, in one way or another, moves through us.
